Kano State Approves ₦8.5 Billion for Health, Water and Other Projects

The Kano State Executive Council has approved a total of ₦8.5 billion (approximately ₦8.53 billion) for the execution of key infrastructure, health, water supply, education and social welfare projects across the state, signalling sustained commitment to economic development and improved public services.

The approvals were granted at the 37th State Executive Council meeting held on January 16, 2026, at the Malam Aminu Kano House, Governor’s Lodge in Abuja. This meeting brought together state policymakers to deliberate on governance and development issues impacting Kano’s economic and social landscape.

Infrastructure and Urban Development

A significant portion of the approved funds is directed toward road construction, drainage systems and urban improvement projects aimed at enhancing connectivity, reducing flood risks and supporting commercial activity.

The council approved ₦1.7 billion for the construction of a two-coat surface-dressed road linking Chiromawa to Garun Babba in Garun Malam Local Government Area. The project is expected to improve access for rural communities and facilitate the movement of agricultural produce to urban markets.

In addition, ₦660.3 million was approved for the construction of reinforced concrete drainage channels and interlocking tiles in Ayagi-Aisami, Dala Local Government Area, to address recurring flooding challenges in the densely populated area. Another ₦147.2 million was allocated for access road construction in Farin Ruwa–Yan Kwadi village, Shanono LGA.

The state also approved ₦176.2 million for the construction of an Arewa Knot and multi-tiered fountains at strategic roundabouts in Kano metropolis, part of an urban renewal and city beautification initiative.

Healthcare Investments

In the health sector, the council approved ₦677.6 million for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Rogo General Hospital, which was recently affected by a fire outbreak. The project aims to restore and expand service delivery capacity in the area.

To strengthen diagnostic services, ₦520 million was approved for the procurement of a CT scan machine for the Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital, a move expected to improve tertiary healthcare delivery and reduce patient referrals outside the state.

The government also approved ₦187.8 million for the construction of additional office space and perimeter fencing for the Primary Health Care Management Board, supporting improved coordination of primary healthcare services.

Education and Social Welfare

In line with human capital development objectives, ₦113.8 million was approved for the renovation of Government Junior Secondary School, Tatsawarki, while ₦148.8 million was allocated for the construction of an orphanage hostel at Nasarawa Children’s Home, strengthening social welfare infrastructure for vulnerable children.

Water Supply and Environmental Projects

Water treatment supply – The approval includes ₦3.1 billion for the supply of aluminium sulphate (alum) to state water facilities for six months in 2026, which will improve water quality and access.

Urban aesthetics and environment – ₦176.2 million for the construction of an Arewa Knot and multi-tiered fountains at key roundabouts in Kano city, aimed at urban beautification and potentially boosting tourism appeal.

Agricultural support – ₦830.2 million is set aside as compensation for farmlands affected by the construction of earth dams across five local government areas, demonstrating attention to agrarian interests.

Land compensation – ₦251.9 million has been allocated for property compensation tied to a five-kilometre dualized road project in Bagwai LGA.
