Enugu’s 2026 Budget: Mbah Tables ₦1.62 Trillion Plan to Boost Statewide Development

The Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, on Tuesday presented a bold and record-setting ₦1.62 trillion budget proposal for 2026 to the Enugu State House of Assembly, describing it as the “Budget of Renewed Momentum.

This proposal marks a 66.5 per cent jump compared with the revised 2025 budget of ₦971 billion — underscoring a decisive shift from laying foundational groundwork to scaling up transformation across all sectors.

On funding, the plan anticipates generating roughly ₦870 billion from internally generated revenue (IGR), ₦387 billion from federal allocations through the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), and ₦329 billion via capital receipts and development financing.

As for priorities, the budget allocates ₦825.9 billion (≈ 51 per cent) to the economic sector and ₦644.7 billion (≈ 40.1 per cent) to the social sector.

Key economic measures include:

  • Plans for 1,200 urban roads and multiple rural roads, completion of major expressways, procurement of 14 additional aircraft for the state airline, and establishment of mass-housing projects.
  • On the social side, education remains a top priority — receiving 32.27 per cent of the total budget. The administration plans to expand its “Smart Schools” initiative by constructing new Smart Secondary Schools and Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) centres statewide in 2026.

Governor Mbah also marked ₦20 billion to clear outstanding gratuities, underlining his administration’s commitment to public servant welfare.

With this ambitious financial blueprint, Enugu State appears set to shift decisively from preparatory investments to ambitious delivery — aiming for infrastructural upgrades, social development, and economic growth in the coming year.
