Zamfara Governor Lawal Proposes ₦861bn 2026 Budget, 83% Dedicated to Capital Projects
The administration of Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has tabled a proposed ₦861 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year before the state’s House of Assembly in Gusau — a plan the governor described as a “roadmap for transformation” for the state.
Under the proposal, ₦714 billion — equivalent to about 83 per cent of the total — is allocated to capital expenditure, while ₦147.28 billion (17 per cent) is earmarked for recurrent costs.
The budget outlines substantial sectoral investments: ₦65 billion is slated for education, ₦87 billion for health, ₦86 billion for agriculture, ₦45 billion for public order and safety, ₦22 billion for environmental protection, and ₦17 billion for social protection.
Governor Lawal said the 2026 plan aligns with his administration’s “Six‑Point Rescue Agenda,” aimed at revitalizing security, healthcare, education, infrastructure, agriculture and social welfare.
He argued that the heavy capital commitment reflects a historic push to rebuild critical infrastructure, modernize agriculture, improve access to services, and create economic opportunities for youth, women and vulnerable communities.
The governor also emphasized that keeping recurrent expenditure well below international benchmarks demonstrates fiscal discipline and allows maximum resources to be directed to development initiatives.
As the proposal awaits legislative scrutiny, many are watching to see how the ambitious allocations will translate into real‑world improvements across Zamfara’s towns and rural communities.
