Diesel Prices Surge 9.45% in October to ₦1,398 per Litre Across Nigeria

Nigeria’s average diesel price rose sharply in October 2025, climbing 9.45% month-on-month to ₦1,398.57 per litre, according to the latest Diesel Price Watch report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

This marks a notable increase from the ₦1,277.81 per litre recorded in September, highlighting the continued pressure on energy costs across the country.

Despite the monthly rise, the NBS data shows a slight year-on-year decline of 2.96% when compared to October 2024, when diesel sold for an average of ₦1,441.28 per litre.

Analysts say this mixed movement reflects the volatility in global oil markets and Nigeria’s foreign exchange challenges, which continue to affect the landing cost of diesel.

Price disparities across states remained significant. Enugu recorded the highest average price at ₦1,468.29, followed by Niger (₦1,465.69) and Jigawa (₦1,437.40). On the other end, Katsina offered the lowest price at ₦1,301.24, while Edo and Kebbi followed closely with averages of ₦1,307.84 and ₦1,308.94 respectively.

Across geopolitical zones, the South-East posted the highest diesel average at ₦1,415.85, while the South-South zone recorded the lowest at ₦1,387.18 per litre.

Energy experts attribute the increase to rising international crude prices, higher transportation costs, and lingering supply chain constraints.

For businesses—especially those dependent on diesel-powered generators and logistics—the higher prices could lead to increased operating costs and further pressure on consumer prices.

With diesel remaining a major industrial fuel source, stakeholders warn that sustained increases may continue to influence inflation and production expenses in the months ahead.
